Duluth Protests Trump Visit: We will knock doors against greed!
I arrived in Duluth, MN yesterday just in time to sit down, center myself and write a quick introductory statement for the screening at the Duluth Labor Temple for a possible endorsement by the AFL-CIO. Three other candidates appeared, including Kirsten Kennedy, who has thankfully recovered from strep throat and pneumonia. Michelle Lee was a no show.
I wrote down what I recalled from some of the picket lines I’ve showed up for, and talked about a struggles in the streets and in online media that non-union workers, the under-employed, small business and average citizens have also participated in. That I productively crossed paths with UFCW organizers who fought to protect union jobs in neighborhood groceries from the Trader Joe’s that was coming to St. Paul, MN about the time that some of us successfully petitioned to block a Trader Joe’s from moving onto the block adjacent to the Wedge Coop and Hum’s Liquors in South Minneapolis. Because we were able to protect the cooperative from unfair competition by a big chain owned by German billionaires who use loss leaders and “three buck chuck” to undermine competitors in the hip natural foods market, we helped create an opportunity for workers at the Wedge Coop to later form a union. That as a part of OccupyMN, I organized support online and lead an effort to connect the Midwest to the struggles of ILWU longshoreman and truckers dealing with unsafe work conditions in Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland and Seattle, participating in one of the largest coordinated actions in organized labor since the end of World War II, the West Coast Ports Shutdown.
So, I had relived some of the biggest protests and successful organizing efforts I’ve participated in before I arrived at my next stop, the Banner Making and Action Planning Event hosted by the Forward Coalition at St Paul’s Episcopal Church.
We heard a list of events the locals have planned to respond to President Trump’s planned rally for his unpopular and hateful, greedy agenda. We volunteered to participate as individuals in creating some social media in support of the Forward Coalition and Duluth DFL, while announcing our planned volunteer event: Doorknock Against Trump, tomorrow.
